The good news: the community here is large enough that every one of these tasks is covered by a professional working in Russian or Ukrainian — there's no need to go through random intermediaries in chat groups. Which professional for which task

Lawyer (abogado) — extranjería (residence permits, temporary protection, citizenship), property transactions, inheritance, court representation, legal risk assessment.
Sworn translator (traductor jurado) — official document translations for public authorities: certificates, diplomas, records, powers of attorney.
Gestoría — taxes (IRPF, IVA, the RENTA return), registering and running an autónomo or a company, routine administrative procedures, certificado digital.
Real estate agent — finding a home, negotiating with the owner, handling the rental or purchase.

The boundaries sometimes overlap (many gestorías also handle extranjería paperwork), but the basic rule is simple: court and contested matters — only an abogado; routine paperwork — a gestoría; documents for public authorities — a sworn translation.

As in any Spanish city, check the bar number (colegiado). Under RD 135/2021 a lawyer is registered with the bar of their principal office (art. 7.1), and that registration grants the right to practice nationwide (art. 7.1 and 14) with no additional habilitación (art. 14.2). A lawyer with an office in Valencia will normally belong to the local Ilustre Colegio de Abogados de Valencia (ICAV) — its public lookup “¿Busca un colegiado?” shows, by number, ejerciente status and insurance; a lawyer whose principal office is in another city legitimately handles Valencia cases from their own bar.

Any sworn translator can be checked in the MAEC official lookup (Buscador STIJ) — by surname, language or province; since 2020 the title is called Traductor Jurado or Intérprete Jurado, and the earlier Traductor-Intérprete Jurado remains valid (RD 724/2020).

Common mistakes

Going to a lawyer when a gestoría is enough (and vice versa). A standard tax return doesn't require a lawyer, and a dispute with your landlord isn't a job for a gestoría. The mistake costs you money or the outcome, in either direction.
Ordering a regular translation when a sworn one is required. A public authority will, as a rule, not accept a translation without a traductor jurado's stamp (the exception is consular translations, see the FAQ) — you'll pay and wait a second time.
Relying on verbal agreements without written confirmation of the scope of work and the price — if a dispute arises, you'll have little to prove your case with.
Not checking the professional's status — the bar number for a lawyer (ICAV lookup), the gestor administrativo title for a gestor (registro.consejogestores.org), MAEC accreditation for a sworn translator (Buscador STIJ). Unlicensed "consultants" are a rare but real risk, especially in social media ads.

What's the difference between a lawyer (abogado) and a gestoría?

An abogado is a lawyer registered with a bar association (colegio de abogados) as ejerciente: they give legal advice and conduct your defence in court (procedural representation in most proceedings belongs to a separate profession, the procurador; RD 135/2021, art. 5.4). A gestor administrativo is also a regulated profession with its own colegio and compulsory liability insurance (Decreto 424/1963): they handle procedures that “do not require the legal technique reserved to the legal profession” — taxes, autónomo, registrations, representing you before the administration, but not in court. The word “gestoría” on a sign is not protected by itself — check that a registered gestor administrativo stands behind it (Consejo General registry: registro.consejogestores.org). For standard paperwork a gestoría is usually faster and cheaper; for court, contested matters, and legal risk assessment you need an actual abogado.

When do you specifically need a sworn translator (traductor jurado)?

Whenever a translated document is submitted to Spanish public authorities: birth and marriage certificates, diplomas, criminal record certificates, powers of attorney. A translation has official character when it is made by a holder of the traductor jurado title granted by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAEC) — Ley 2/2014, disp. adic. 16ª, and RD 724/2020; it needs no legalisation, and the translator's stamp carries their MAEC registry number, which you can check in the ministry's official online lookup (Buscador STIJ). Translations made or endorsed by a Spanish consulate abroad (for a foreign document in its own file) and by your country's consulate in Spain (for its laws and public documents) also have official character. For everyday needs (correspondence, understanding a contract for yourself) a regular translator is enough.

How do I check that a lawyer is actually licensed?

Ask for their bar number (número de colegiado) and the name of the bar association (colegio de abogados) they belong to, then verify directly with that association. Under RD 135/2021 a lawyer must be registered with the bar of their principal office (art. 7.1), and that registration grants the right to practice throughout Spain (art. 7.1 and 14) — another bar may demand neither an additional habilitación nor fees (art. 14.2). Do I need a Russian- or Ukrainian-speaking professional if my Spanish is already decent?

Not necessarily, but for documents and taxes even good conversational Spanish often isn't enough — the fine print in contracts, tax returns, and applications matters. A professional who works in your language removes that risk and is usually already familiar with the typical cases of Ukrainian/Russian-speaking clients (temporary protection, document legalisation, taxes for recent arrivals).
