DNV or NLV — which visa fits you?

Answer one question about your work plans in Spain — find out which visa (digital nomad or non-lucrative) fits, and estimate the required income or means for 2026.

Both visas are for citizens of countries OUTSIDE the EU. If you're an EU/EEA or Swiss citizen, you need neither — you already have the right to live and work in Spain under freedom of movement. If you hold Spanish temporary protection (protección temporal), you also already have residence and work rights and don't need either visa.

Do you plan to work while in Spain?

Reference estimate for 2026 only. DNV: 200% of the SMI (€1,221/month ×14 payments = €34,188/year for the applicant, Ley 14/2013 art. 62) + 75% SMI for the first family member + 25% SMI for each additional one; income must be STABLE and recurring (employment contract/client contracts) — one-off payments don't count. NLV: 400% of the IPREM (€600/month ×12 = €28,800/year for the applicant, RD 1155/2024 art. 62.1.a) + 100% IPREM per family member, additive; can be proven with SAVINGS OR recurring income — that's a key difference from the DNV. The 2026 IPREM figure rests on a budget prórroga (4th consecutive frozen year) — no 2026 norm states it explicitly by name. Does NOT model: the amount required for NLV RENEWAL (24 months — double the initial figure, art. 62.2), switching from the NLV to a work-permitting authorization after ≥1 year of residence (a SEPARATE authorization, not "the NLV allows work"), the full document checklist for either visa (see our DNV guide), or the separate route for accompanying family members under either visa. Not legal or tax advice — consult an immigration lawyer before applying.
