Cita previa at extranjería: how to land an appointment (NIE, TIE, fingerprints) in Spain

If you've ever tried to book an appointment at extranjería, you know the pain: «not a single slot», the system hangs, and your procedures are stuck. It's the number one problem for Ukrainians and Russian speakers handling paperwork in Spain. This guide covers how the cita previa works, where to book it free, when slots actually appear and what to do when there are none.

What the cita previa is and why you need it

The cita previa is the advance booking of a slot at a public body. For immigration matters that's extranjería (fingerprints for the TIE, submitting applications, certificates, etc.). Without an appointment you simply can't get into most offices.

The appointment via the State is always free

Booking the appointment on the official portal costs nothing. Any website or person charging for the appointment itself is a middleman or a scam. It only makes sense to pay a gestor/lawyer for an accompaniment service, not for «access to the appointment».

Where to book officially

The only official channel is the State's electronic portal (Sede electrónica, the ICP system, «Cita previa de extranjería»):

sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es

The order: pick provincetrámite (type of procedure) → office. Then you enter your data and, if there's a free slot, confirm the appointment.

Watch out for clone sites

Search-engine ads often surface look-alike sites that charge money or harvest your data. Only go to the address above (the administracionespublicas.gob.es domain), not via an ad link.

When free slots appear

Slots are released in batches, not evenly. Typical windows to check:

  • around 00:00 (midnight) — many offices open appointments for the following week;
  • early morning ~8:00–8:30 — a second typical window;
  • more slots tend to appear on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Seize the moment

Open the portal precisely in those windows and be ready to go through every step fast. A slot can be taken in seconds — keep your data (passport, NIE) at hand in advance.

What to do when there are no appointments

It's normal — demand is huge. Strategies that work:

  • Nearby provinces/offices. Many procedures don't have to be done in your place of residence — a less saturated province often has slots more frequently.
  • Grab a closer one, cancel the old one. If you take a far-off date, keep looking for an earlier one and cancel the previous one when you find a better slot (don't hold two: it hurts everyone).
  • Technical tricks against blocks: incognito mode, a different browser (Chrome/Firefox/Edge), mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. Don't refresh the page too aggressively.
  • Persistence. Often it's not «magic» but persistence that works: short checks in the release windows every day.

Paid «we find a cita» services: be careful

Some paid services are bots that grab free public slots (a grey area), others are outright prepay fraud. If you decide to pay, do so only to a trusted gestor/lawyer for a transparent service. Not to an anonymous prepay site.

Urgent cases

In a documented urgent situation some offices may attend in person: go and explain the urgency with supporting documents. It's an exception, not the general route — check your specific office's procedure beforehand.

Tip

With a certificado digital or Cl@ve, some procedures can be done online — without chasing a cita. If you're stuck on the appointment or unsure about the procedure type, ask our assistant or find a Russian-/Ukrainian-speaking gestor in the directory.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the cita previa cost?
Through the official portal it's free. Any website or person charging for the appointment itself is a middleman or a scam. It only makes sense to pay a gestor/lawyer for an accompaniment service, but the appointment via the State is always free.
Where do you officially book the extranjería cita previa?
On the State's electronic headquarters (the ICP system, «Cita previa de extranjería»): sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es. You pick province → trámite (procedure) → office. Beware of clone sites in search ads.
What time do free slots appear?
Slots are released in batches. Typical windows: around 00:00 (midnight) — many offices open appointments for the following week — and early morning ~8:00–8:30. More slots often appear on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. It's worth checking precisely in those windows.
What if there are no appointments in my province at all?
Try nearby provinces/offices with less demand — many procedures don't have to be done in your place of residence. If you grab a far-off date, keep looking for an earlier one and cancel the previous one when you find it.
The system blocks me after a few attempts — what do I do?
Try incognito mode, a different browser (Chrome/Firefox/Edge), and mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. Don't refresh the page too aggressively — it can block you temporarily.
Do I need a NIE/TIE to book?
It depends on the procedure. For toma de huellas (fingerprints for the TIE) you need the number from your status resolution; for others, passport/NIE. On the portal, the trámite itself indicates which data to enter.
Is it safe to use paid «we find a cita» services?
Be careful. Some are bots that grab free public slots (a grey area) and others are outright fraud. If you decide to pay, do so only to a trusted gestor/lawyer for a transparent service, never to an anonymous prepay website.
What if my case is urgent and there's no appointment?
In documented urgent situations some offices may attend in person: go and explain the urgency (with supporting documents). It's an exception, not the rule; check your office's procedure beforehand.
